Schumacher and Vettel too had dominant periods but this year is a bit different as of the 20 races thus far, Verstappen has only failed to win six. Of course, Mercedes have had a domination period in the hybrid era too. Lotus in 1978, McLaren in 1984, Williams in 1992, Ferrari in the Noughties.

There have been seasons in the past where teams and/or drivers have dominated the sport. Verstappen still has a chance to beat that in 2022, a championship he trailed five races into the season. His achievements sometimes don’t receive the plaudits that they should, because actually what we’ve witnessed this year is an absolutely outstanding performance from a driver that is very much at the top of his game,” summed up Horner.
